Discover the Slătineanu collection, through the stories of our guides, during a dedicated tour of the Slătineanu Story exhibition. The recovered collection!
The exceptional collection is one of the most valuable in Romania and is based on the passion for art passed down from father to son. Started by Alexandru Slătineanu (1873–1939) and enriched by Barbu Slătineanu (1892–1959), it includes valuable works of art, including the only Van Gogh in our country, “The Carrot Picker”, purchased by Alexandru Slătineanu, around 1900, from Paris.
The centerpiece of our exhibition is this very work signed by Van Gogh, made in charcoal on paper and dated 1885. The work is part of the series that captures, in a very realistic spirit, Dutch peasants at their daily work, a subject that intensely preoccupied Van Gogh during the period 1883-1885, when he lived in Nuenen.
The work remains, after more than a century, the only Van Gogh on Romanian territory.
