The only Van Gogh in Romania is exhibited for the first time at Art Safari.
The centerpiece of the exhibition “The Recovered Collection. The Slătineanu Story” is “The Carrot Picker”, made in charcoal on paper and dated 1885 by Vincent Van Gogh. It was purchased around 1900 by the doctor and collector Alexandru Slătineanu, directly from the famous art dealer Ambroise Vollard. The same dealer who had launched Picasso and Matisse.
Although the Slătineanu collection was taken over by the state, piece by piece, during the communist regime, in 2026 it was returned to the heirs, following a redress process that stretched over several years.
Discover the story of the only Van Gogh in Romania, and see up close a work that has crossed history, private collections and the great transformations of the 20th century.
Exhibition curated by Monica Dumitru and Maria Munteanu
Scenography Diana Nicolaie
Exhibition made courtesy of the Slătineanu family
